Things to know before booking your Cairo tour

Whether you have a full day or just a few hours, matching the right tour to your travel style is essential. Use this guide to find your best fit:

  • Best for first-time visitors: Full-day Cairo tours. The most comprehensive choice for those who want every detail managed. These all-inclusive tours cover the Giza pyramids and allow you to choose between the Saqqara or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Lunch, a private guide, and hotel transfers are all included.
  • Best for short stays: Half-day Giza tours. Ideal for travelers with limited time or those arriving on short layovers. This 4–5 hour focused excursion covers the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx without the full-day commitment.
  • Best for families and seniors: Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). The gem is the gold standard for comfortable sightseeing. It is fully wheelchair accessible and climate-controlled, making it the best way to see the Tutankhamun collection in a manageable 3-hour window.
  • Best for evening entertainment: Nile Maxim dinner cruise. The city’s most prestigious evening experience. This 5-star floating restaurant features a gourmet buffet and live cultural performances, including belly dancing and tanoura, as you cruise the illuminated Cairo skyline.

Strategic timing: Morning vs. evening

  • Pyramids and Sphinx: Always prioritize morning tours (starting around 8:00 am). This allows you to finish outdoor sightseeing before the 10:30am crowd surge and the peak desert heat.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum: Because the museum is fully climate-controlled, it is comfortable at any time of day. It is the perfect "midday escape" to bridge the gap between morning pyramids and evening plans.
  • Nile dinner cruises: Most vessels depart after sunset from central Cairo (near Tahrir Square). This is the natural way to end a full day of sightseeing on a high note.
Beyond Cairo

If you have extra days in Egypt, extend your journey to Luxor, Aswan, or the Red Sea for temples along the Nile, scenic cruises, and relaxed beach stays, all reachable from Cairo.

Giza Pyramids with tourists and camels in the desert near Cairo, Egypt.
  • Autumn (Oct–Nov): The most comfortable window with clear skies and 20–28°C weather, ideal for the Pyramids and Saqqara.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Peak season with mild 15–22°C days. High demand requires booking tours at least 14 days in advance.
  • Spring (Mar–May): Warm and dry, though occasional sandstorms can occur. The indoor GEM tour is a perfect backup for low-visibility days.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Extreme heat often exceeds 35°C. Prioritize early morning Pyramid starts and climate-controlled museum visits.
  • Evening comfort: The Nile Maxim cruise is enjoyable year-round, offering a refreshing break from daytime desert temperatures.
Person standing in front of the Pyramid of Djoser in Giza, Egypt.
  • Sturdy footwear: Closed-toe walking shoes are essential for the uneven, sandy terrain at the Giza Plateau and Saqqara.
  • Sun protection: A wide-brimmed hat, UV-polarized sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are mandatory for all outdoor sightseeing.
  • Hydration & snacks: Bring a refillable water bottle and a light morning snack to bridge the gap between pickup and the included lunch.
  • Identification: A physical passport or high-quality digital copy is required for security checkpoints and museum entry.
  • Smart layers: A light jacket or pashmina is useful for the air-conditioned Grand Egyptian Museum and the Nile's evening breezes.
  • Confirmation: Keep a digital or printed copy of your booking confirmation readily available for smooth check-in at each site.
Visitors walking through ancient stone passageway at Giza Pyramids, Cairo.
  • Ancient structures: Touching or climbing any pyramid or tomb is strictly prohibited and carries heavy legal penalties.
  • Restricted zones: Always stay within clearly marked visitor paths; your Egyptologist will advise on which areas are open for entry.
  • Photography policy: Standard photography is permitted outdoors; however, flash is banned in museums and specific Tutankhamun galleries.
  • Drone ban: Drones are strictly illegal at all archaeological, heritage, and military sites throughout Egypt without exception.
  • Security screening: Expect routine bag scans and metal detector checks at all major monument entrances and the GEM.
  • Cruise etiquette: Photography is welcome during the Nile Maxim show, but please avoid using flash to respect the performers and guests.
Couple enjoying a private tour in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza, Cairo.
  • Heritage sites: Choose loose, breathable fabrics. Covering shoulders and knees is recommended for sun protection and local cultural respect.
  • Grand Egyptian Museum: Smart-casual attire is appropriate. The facility is fully air-conditioned, so a light layer is highly recommended.
  • Nile dinner cruise: This is a 5-star experience; smart-casual dress is required. Please avoid beachwear, flip-flops, or sports kits.
  • Footwear choice: Trainers or hiking sandals provide the best grip on ancient stones. Avoid heels or thin-soled shoes for plateau walking.
  • Cultural sensitivity: Avoid wearing clothing with offensive graphics or slogans when visiting active religious or heritage locations.
  • Practicality: Darker colors or "dust-friendly" fabrics are better for outdoor sites where desert sand is prevalent.
Person jumping in front of the Pyramids of Giza, Cairo, during a tour.
  • Beat the crowds: Schedule your Giza Plateau visit for an 8:00 AM start to secure the best lighting and avoid the midday tour bus rush.
  • Guided navigation: The GEM is massive; let your Egyptologist curate the route to ensure you see the key highlights of the 100,000+ artifacts.
  • Bundle for value: Booking the Full-Day Cairo Tour is significantly more cost-effective than booking the Pyramids and GEM as separate excursions.
  • Be prepared: Arrive in your hotel lobby 15 minutes before the scheduled pickup for the Nile Maxim to ensure a timely departure.
  • Ask questions: Your guide is a certified historian. Engaging with them transforms the site from "old stones" into a vivid historical narrative.
  • Local currency: Carry small Egyptian Pound (EGP) notes for tipping, using public restrooms, and bargaining at the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

Frequently asked questions about Cairo tours

Do I need to book a Cairo tour in advance?

Yes. During peak season (October to April) book 1-2 weeks ahead. Private and small-group tours fill fastest. Off-peak months sometimes allow last-minute booking, but options are reduced.

Are Cairo tours suitable for children and older travelers?

Families find both the Pyramids and the GEM engaging, though both involve walking and heat. Private tours allow more flexible pacing. The GEM is fully wheelchair accessible. Note any mobility needs at booking so the right tour is recommended.

What languages are available?

Most Cairo tours run in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Arabic. Private tours offer more flexibility for less common languages; book 1-2 weeks in advance.

What is the Nile Maxim?

Cairo's most decorated dinner cruise vessel, awarded Best Cruising Restaurant multiple times by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism. The 2-hour cruise includes an open buffet dinner, live belly dancing, and a Tanoura folkloric performance. Hotel pickup from Cairo and Giza is included.

Are Cairo tours safe for travelers?

Cairo’s primary tourist zones are designated as high-security corridors with a visible Tourist Police presence and 24/7 monitoring. Tours utilize only licensed Egyptologist guides and registered drivers who follow government-mandated safety protocols. Sticking with a guided group ensures you bypass local congestion and navigate the city’s busy landscape with an expert local advocate.

What Is the cancellation policy?

Most day tours offer a full refund or free rescheduling if cancelled at least 24 to 48 hours before the scheduled pickup time. Large group bookings or tours involving domestic flights may have stricter windows, typically requiring 7 days' notice for a partial refund. During high-traffic periods like Easter or Christmas, cancellation terms may extend to 15 days due to high demand for private guides.

How does hotel pickup work?

Complimentary pickup is included for all hotels in Cairo and Giza; your driver will meet you directly in the main lobby. You will receive a final confirmation via WhatsApp or Email the evening before your tour with the exact pickup time and driver details. Morning tours typically begin with pickups between 7:30am and 8:30am to ensure you arrive at the sites as the gates open. We recommend being ready 10 minutes early; for remote or restricted-access hotels, we will coordinate a nearby, secure meeting point.

Can I take photos at the sites?

Photography with mobile phones is free at all outdoor sites, including the Giza Pyramids and the Great Sphinx exteriors. Mobile photography is permitted in the Grand Egyptian Museum, though flash, tripods, and selfie sticks are strictly prohibited in all galleries. Large DSLR cameras or professional video gear may require an additional "Camera Ticket" or a special permit at specific tomb sites. Drone photography is strictly illegal across all of Egypt. Photography of security checkpoints or military buildings is also prohibited.

We had an incredible day. We set off with our guide Reda, a fantastic, wonderful person who was able to explain all the monuments of Egyptian civilization and the different dynasties to us. We also visited the Sphinx. He gave us lots ofexplanations about it and also about all the different types of pyramids. We then visited the new Grand Egyptian Museum, where he really took the time to show us around the entire museum and explain many of the objects. It was a unique experience. I recommend this guide to everyone. He has a great knowledge of Egyptian history. He explained everything in French. He accompanied us all day and it was an exceptional day thanks to him. We would also like to thank the driver, Sayed, a very good driver with exemplary driving skills. We felt safe and it was a real pleasure to be driven by someone so professional in a very nice car. We are very happy with Luna Travel Egypt, and we will definitely use them again if we return to Egypt. Thank you to everyone for giving us a dream day.

He showed us everything, took pictures. Then we saw the Sphinx, our guide had some extra maps/pics where he explained about the pyramids inside and the whole Giza complex. Then we went to a papyrus museum/store. He offered to take us to one of essential oils. We were going for grand Egyptian museum afterwards, he gave us some tips and asked our driver to leave us there. It was just us + guide.

A wonderful tour with our guide Tarek, who speaks Italian very well. We were two families with children, and he was very attentive to our needs. The itinerary was followed exactly, though we spent more time at the GEM in the afternoon because it’s truly massive; in exchange, he added a visit to the Papyrus Museum and a shop selling perfumes made from lotus and various spices. We skipped the Bazaar due to time constraints, but by then we were tired, so we didn’t mind it particularly. Highly recommended.
